Coventry’s Through Care team, part of Children’s Services, successfully applied to join The House Project, which is a national charity, after a process culminating in a presentation by care leavers on why they should be accepted.

The Coventry House Project launched in July 2021.

The House Project works with Citizen Housing to identify suitable properties and a group of around 10 young people aged 17 form links with local companies and training providers to get their properties ready and build connections for pathways into the world of work.

Coventry has a successful partnership with Valpak, a waste and recycling company.

The beauty of the relationship is that we are here if they need anything, it is not forced,”. “We have found the young people are really engaged in the process. They have to apply to be part of the Coventry House Project and this first cohort are a really tightknit group. It has been brilliant seeing how they develop, and the positive experiences they have been having.

Through these connections they will be involved in making their house a home and learning the skills to manage their home which provides the base to live independent and fulfilling lives.

When they have refurbished their property, they move into their home; initially on an introductory tenancy, with a view to them having a long-term tenancy.

The House Project ensures that the young people maintain and sustain their tenancies by developing a community of support around them. Young people are supported into education, employment and training but also learn a range of skills including budgeting, cooking, and networking.

Child Friendly Cov Campaign

The Coventry House Project is part of the city council’s ambition to become a child friendly city. Child Friendly Cov is a campaign to ensure that Coventry is a child and young person friendly city – a place where children and young people feel valued, supported, and enjoy themselves.
